Knowledge For The Know-It-All Adult When It Comes To Sex Ed

Some people believe that they know everything when it comes to sexual education. There are many questions that are asked by adolescents that adults think they know. However, some knowledge is inherently unknowable. Take for example the history of bisexual and homosexual relationships throughout history. While these have been well documented, biologists and scientists still wonder what utility being gay had throughout history. This has been the topic of research papers and debates alike. There is no concrete answer when it comes to homosexuality. Some biologists hypothesize that homosexual behavior was advantageous to raising children during the nomad era. This could lead to close connections in the community, and forming bonds between male caretakers. Another thing that a know-it-all may not realize is that homosexual behavior has been documented throughout the animal kingdom.

For those who argue that homosexuality is “unnatural”, it is hard to reconcile the fact that there have been several male courtships in the animal kingdom. This behavior has been recorded in black swans, seagulls, and most recently penguins. Roy and Silo caused quite a stir in the New York Central Park Zoo in the early 2000s. They were two chinstrap penguins that became partners. It was one the earliest documented cases of an animal species that was acting in a homosexual way. Roy and Silo taught researchers plenty about human sexuality as well. Part of that being that homosexuality had to do with genes and is not a “choice”. This is a lesson that everyone can take away from this research.

Sex education can be a difficult topic to teach. Many adolescents have questions that the teacher may or may not be experienced with. It is important to keep an open mind and not be a know-it-all when it comes to this topic. Human knowledge of sexuality is continually evolving and changing, just like any other category of knowledge. This is also a vitally important area for teachers. Many adults do not feel comfortable talking about sexual education, so it is important to have those who do. This is a great service that adults can give students. The transition from child to adult can be awkward, especially when it comes to sexuality. It is important to gain and spread as much accurate information is possible. However, there is a fine line between being an expert and being a know-it-all. Most experts are comfortable with their knowledge of a topic, while the know-it-all has something to prove. This consideration is important for any prospective teacher.
